What is Pro-Xylane (β-Xylose)?
Pro-Xylane (INCI: Hydroxypropyl Tetrahydropyrantriol) is a synthetic molecule derived from xylose, a sugar found in beechwood. Developed and patented by L'Oréal Research in the early 2000s and used in their premium lines like Lancôme Absolue and Helena Rubinstein, Pro-Xylane has reached generic supply since key patents expired in the late 2010s. Chinese consumers know it as "玻色因" (Bo-Se-Yin), and it has become one of the dominant premium anti-aging actives in Asian skincare from 2022 onward. CALLA sources from qualified Chinese suppliers with documented purity ≥99% and produces creams, serums, and ampoules with concentrations from 1% to 10%.
How It Works
Pro-Xylane stimulates the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) — the proteoglycans that hold water and structural support between collagen fibers in the dermis. By increasing GAG production, Pro-Xylane plumps the dermis from within, improving skin firmness and reducing wrinkle depth. Independent studies (including L'Oréal's own published data) demonstrate measurable improvement in skin elasticity at concentrations of 3% and above after 8 weeks. The molecule is exceptionally stable across pH and temperature ranges, making it forgiving in formulation.
Market Context for Brand Owners
Pro-Xylane is currently the single most-searched anti-aging active in Chinese cosmetic e-commerce and is gaining rapid traction in Korean, Japanese, and LatAm markets. Brand owners launching anti-aging product lines often request Pro-Xylane as their lead claim ingredient because consumers already recognize "玻色因" from premium brand marketing. Consumer-facing serums with 3-5% Pro-Xylane retail at USD 35-120; creams at USD 60-180. The ingredient supports premium positioning while still being accessible at OEM price points.
Formulation & Manufacturing Notes
Highly stable. Compatible with virtually all common skincare actives including retinol, niacinamide, peptides, ceramides, and acids (within reasonable pH ranges). Soluble in water, no special carriers required. Optimal pH 4.5-7.0. Typical effective concentrations: 1% (entry-level), 3% (mid-tier), 5% (premium), up to 10% (luxury claim). At 5% and above, Pro-Xylane can be used as the lead "hero" claim. Pairs especially well with hyaluronic acid and centella.
Regulatory Status
Pro-Xylane is approved as a cosmetic ingredient in all major markets including FDA (US), CPSR (EU/UK), TGA (Australia), CFDA/NMPA (China), KFDA (Korea), ANVISA (Brazil), COFEPRIS (Mexico), INVIMA (Colombia), and Saudi FDA. No special restrictions on concentration in most jurisdictions.
